Why We Matter
The need for literacy services in our region and in Maine is significant. According to the Barbara Bush Foundation:
- 63% of Maine 4th grade students read at a Below Proficient level
- 10% of Maine adults have less than a high school diploma
- 64% of children under age 6 in Maine with parents who have less than a high school diploma, are economically poor
Midcoast Literacy is the only organization in our region providing the unique free, year-round services and programs we offer. With the assistance of our dedicated volunteers and generous donors, we help struggling readers become capable, confident readers. We ensure families have books in their homes to read together.
We strengthen our communities by supporting our neighbors to achieve their goals and improve their lives, one person at a time.
