Success Story: Paul & Emery

Our November Success Story (also featured in our e-mail newsletter) celebrates tutor Paul and student Emery for two years of dedicated work and growth in our Read Together program.

When Emery first came to us as a second grader, he was struggling, having spent first grade learning remotely and receiving reading resource instruction through Zoom due to COVID-19 restrictions. Meeting twice a week with Paul after school and during the summer months, Emery moved out of Title One services mid-way through third grade and now as a fourth grader has been reading for fun because of the books and series he and Paul share. Emery’s mother has been thrilled with the progress he has made. “Emery never wants to miss a session, even if he has to, because he really enjoys the bond he shares with Paul,” said his mother, Rebecca. “This program not only teaches reading and writing skills but also creates lasting bonds through the one-on-one tutoring that are incredibly important.”

Paul puts a lot of thought into all his sessions with Emery. “I feel blessed to have a student like Emery. He has a strong work ethic, learns easily, and is a pleasure to be around. He has made great strides in reading and writing. We read out loud at each session and he always takes home a book to read. Also, Emery’s parents are very supportive of what we do.”

Having been reading chapter books for many months now, Emery is looking forward to reading the fourth book in the Jake Drake series by Andrew Clements with Paul: grade-level books for a fourth grader! But improved reading isn’t Emery’s greatest point of pride. When asked about his tutoring experience, Emery wrote, “Before I started tutoring, I couldn’t do cursive. Now I can write in cursive and my handwriting improved.” Literacy success comes in many forms.

Congratulations to Emery and Paul for all they have accomplished together these past two years and keep following us for more success stories from our tutors throughout the year!
