In the new installment of our tutoring success stories series (which are also featured in Midcoast Literacy's e-mail newsletter) we're highlighting the tutoring pair of Evie & Chloe.
We’re celebrating the collaboration between tutor Evie Rickley and learner Chloe to talk about their successful transition to remote learning. Evie and Chloe started working together in January, 2020, but after less than two months, their in-person meetings had to stop due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Not wanting to lose momentum, Evie adapted her lessons to meeting over Zoom and e-mailed info in advance to Chloe’s grandparents. “Each session is divided into 3 sections: word problems, vocabulary and reading,” says Evie. “We are reading Charlotte's Web. We each have a copy and take turns reading. We always make time to discuss the characters and the plot as we go along.”
“I like working with Evie,” says Chloe. “When we read together, we take turns. It helps me understand the book better. I am learning new words!” Evie’s quick transition to distance learning has paid off, as Chloe's progress has continued even though they haven’t met face-to-face since March. "I am impressed with how much Chloe's reading comprehension has improved," adds Evie. "She is a delight to work with."
Congratulations to both Chloe and Evie, who show us that remote tutoring doesn't have to mean less learning! And keep following us for more success stories from our tutors throughout the year.
