Success Story: Douce & Alden

We're starting a new series of tutoring success stories also featured in Midcoast Literacy's e-mail newsletter. Our first tutoring pair to highlight are Alden and Douce.

We’re celebrating the collaboration between tutor Alden Sproul and learner Douce, because she acheived a significant milestone last  month when she  passed her HiSET (High School Equivalency Test). Douce arrived in Maine in 2018 with a rudimentary knowledge of English. She began working with Alden through Midcoast Literacy that October, and the two of them have worked together on Douce’s HISET studies since then, while Douce has also taken classes with Bath Adult Education.

"She worked steadily and determinedly at each topic," says Alden. "I have never worked with a more dedicated and hardworking student. She has a great sense of humor and has been a joy to work with." Now that Douce has passed her HiSET, her new goal is to work toward a Bachelor’s degree in a liberal arts field.

Douce wrote about Alden: “Working with my tutor has been an amazing experience. We started with learning the language at first, and worked on different projects later on . . . writing resumes, getting my driver's license, preparing for the HISET test, and now working on college readiness. Alden has encouraged me, and believed in my abilities.”

Congratulations to both Douce and Alden, whose more than a year of dedicated work together has paid off again this spring. And watch this space for more success stories from our tutors throughout the year.
