Success Story: Kathy & Baldo

Our March Success Story (also featured in our e-mail newsletter) celebrates the progress of ELL learner Baldo and his tutor, Kathy Johannessen.

Baldo and Kathy have been working together since December 2022, and still have never met in person! Because of Baldo’s busy schedule with work and family, and Kathy living a distance away in Knox County, they tutor remotely on Zoom every week. Baldo moved to Maine 4 years ago, and was looking for an ELL class. As a manager at a local restaurant, he wanted to improve his written and spoken communication with customers and vendors. “Baldo had a good basic understanding [of English] when we started, and expressed a need to improve his pronunciation, and to better understand the different verb tenses and when to use them,” said Kathy. “Speaking and listening are the hardest skills when studying a new language. As his conversation partner, I was able to pinpoint the areas that needed help to improve his language skills.”

Working remotely has allowed Kathy and Baldo to keep meeting every week for more than a year, and Baldo’s progress is evident. “With his dedication and hard work, and practicing after our lessons, Baldo’s mastery of English has improved significantly,” said Kathy. “He’s very bright, intuitive, and asks great questions, which always lead to another meaningful exchange. It has been a pleasure to work with Baldo.” .

Baldo has seen the results from his point of view too. “I have been a student for over one year. Kathy has helped me a lot with communicating with customers and vendors. My pronunciation has improved,” he said. “She even helped me with understanding expectations and daily routines with my daughter when she was starting public school. It’s been a very good experience.”

Congratulations to Baldo and Kathy on a very successful first year of tutoring and keep following us for more success stories from our tutors throughout the year!
